The Lectio Translations professional team

The translation of medical texts is a collective effort at Lectio Translations.  Our team, which has been closely bonded and working together for more than 20 years, guarantees the highest quality of your translation projects in the shortest amount of time and with the greatest results. Members of our team include:

  • A crucial member of the team is the experienced and qualified medical translator. A word may need to be translated differently based on the organ system or the specialty, or even two terminologies may be equally correct but one may be more widely used than the other. The skilled medical translator is aware of these quirks and has the experience to immediately adapt the translation to the context given by the customer. The end product is flawless, top-notch translation that satisfies our clients’ needs and meets the strictest deadlines.
  • The proofreader, who in the case of medical translation is a medical doctor, is another crucial member of the Lectio Translations team. The medical doctor proofreads the complete translation, or at least the sections with medical content, based on your budget.
  • The translation team may consist of additional people depending on the project and the sort of translations being done, such as a statistician to translate clinical trial statistical considerations and other relevant content, or a graphic artist to help with non-editable text that must maintain a consistent visual style.

While at Lectio Translations we completely appreciate the significance of a good translation, we also understand how valuable your time is.  Therefore, we make it our goal to consistently adhere to the deadline you specify.  If we set the deadline, we guarantee that your project will be delivered to you as soon as feasible.

This is made possible by our many years in the industry and the many pages we have translated since 1996.

We can therefore:

  1. Make a reasonable assessment of the task at hand.
  2. Determine the precise amount of time needed to complete a task.
  3. Include a time buffer
  4. Use all possible means to achieve this goal (use CAT Tools, have an extensive terminology database accumulated from experience and more).
  5. Target a time before the deadline and remain structured and focused until the translation is complete.

Lectio Translations is equipped to handle urgent requests for certified translations on the same day thanks to our experience and knowledge in the field.

Medical Translation: An Extremely Challenging Profession

Medical translation is the process of translating documents relating to Clinical Studies (Protocols, Consent Forms (ICFs), Patient Information Forms), relations with regulatory authorities (SmPCs, PILs), or documents relating to the promotion of pharmaceutical products, or to the training of pharmaceutical company personnel.  It also entails translating patient exams, user manuals for medical equipment, and virtually any other document pertaining to healthcare.

Translation in the fields of cosmetics and veterinary medicine are two additional sub-specialties that fall under the umbrella of medical translation.

As it pertains to health, the field of medical and pharmaceutical translations requires absolute precision, knowledge, and familiarity with the subject, the appropriate terminology, and the general style of writing.

Medical Translation Challenges

  • The obvious difficulty in medical translation is knowledge and experience in the use of terminology, which is very demanding and complex and must be rendered with absolute precision every time because the slightest misinterpretation can have serious consequences on the result.
  • The correct use of the Greek language (or English, depending on the situation) also presents a challenge. Because the Greek language is so rich, it gives its speakers a lot of options, which makes it hard to choose.
  • Translations in the pharmaceutical sector are another significant issue that requires special attention. It is necessary to have an understanding of chemical terminology and elementary biology in order to correctly render the various drug terms.
  • Often, even an experienced translator isn’t enough to translate a long medical text, like a clinical study protocol.
  • If a translator wants to succeed in the medical translation industry, it is nearly impossible given the requirements of that industry to move into other fields. Specialization, in other words, is required for good translation.
  • εξειδίκευση.

COMPLEXITY OF MEDICAL TRANSLATION

The specialized field of medical translation presents certain challenges that only an experienced language professional can overcome:

  • Medical Terminology: Medical terminology has Greek and Latin roots. Of course, the fact that our mother tongue is Greek helps, but the difficulty remains, necessitating constant engagement and knowledge cultivation.  At the same time, because of how quickly things are changing, new terms are always coming up. This makes it important to keep track of the issues.  As a result, in addition to a large library (both electronic and physical) of medical dictionaries and access to online resources, the translator must stay informed and renew his knowledge on a regular basis in order to deal with the complexity of medical texts.
  • Writing Abilities: The style of medical texts varies significantly from text to text. While Clinical Trial Protocols should be written in a tentative and scientific manner. Patient Diaries and Consent Forms require a more patient-friendly language.  As a result, in addition to perfect translation, the translator should be able to adapt the style of the text to the target audience.  It is crucial that the reader can easily read and comprehend the text, based on his or her level of subject knowledge.
  • Abbreviations: Abbreviations present another challenge for medical translators. Two problems come up: the first is the obvious one: how are they translated, since they occasionally need to be translated.  The second question is whether they should be translated.  When translating from English to Greek, the English initials are frequently used in the Greek language, and a Greek translation is uncommon.

Our approach to them

  • Specialization is essential for medical translation because of the numerous challenges involved. A medical translator must focus solely on this field in order to be successful. Most translators can’t do this because it would hurt their ability to make a living.  Since 1996, Lectio Translations has been able to specialize solely in medical translations, and we work with a carefully selected small group of translators who are familiar with medical terminology.
  • Language experts: One critical factor is the use of the Greek language, which, due to its richness, provides many options, not all of which are appropriate for medical texts.  A good medical translator has experience and knowledge in both medical terminology and the Greek language.  Lectio Translations places a great deal of importance on this issue.
  • We use official terminologies, prescriptions, and the pharmacopoeia: while options are generally provided in the wording, in order to facilitate the approval of pharmaceutical products by regulatory authorities, certain terms must be translated in a particular manner imposed by specific bodies. We, at Lectio Translations, understand this need and make every effort to adhere to official terminology.
  • We work with doctors: no one knows the correct and commonly used terminology better than the doctors themselves, whom we consult according to their specialty.
  • We collaborate with other experts, such as statisticians: a thorough understanding of statistical terminology is especially important when translating Clinical Trial Protocols. We meet this requirement through the translation of a specialist statistician.
  • We collaborate with our client (concerning larger translations such as Clinical Study Protocols): because there may be multiple correct terminology options for the Greek language, we send our clients our suggested glossary for review prior to each collaboration in order to weed out any potential issues in the translation that are solely related to the customer’s preference.
